The Right Font Matters!

Whether you’re a graphic designer working on a company logo, a web designer developing a new website, a fashion designer creating new styles, or even a freelance artist, your choice of font makes a big difference. Using an inappropriate font can make your design look unprofessional, unattractive, old fashioned, or simply bland. Choosing the right font, on the other hand, can help make sure that your design is eye-catching and engaging, as well as consistent with what you – or your client – had in mind.

Adobe Illustrator automatically imports all the fonts you have on your computer, but very often these might not have just what you’re looking for. In that case, you’ll want to search the web in order to find the right font (or fonts) for your project. Envato Elements is a subscription service offering unlimited assets for graphic designers, including many fonts. But once you’ve found the fonts you’re looking for, how do you add them to Illustrator? This short article will answer just that.

How Do I Get My Envato Fonts into Illustrator?

Envato fonts come in a format called OpenType (file extensions .0tf and .ttf), which is supported by both Windows and Mac computers. This makes adding them to illustrator relatively simple and hassle-free. The process is a little different for each operating system, but neither one should take more then a few minutes. We will walk you through the installation process – step by step – for both operating systems.

On Windows

  • Make sure you close Adobe Illustrator and all other applications that use fonts.
  • Download your selected fonts. They will be placed into your destination of choice in archive format (file extension .zip or .rar).
  • Extract the files in the archive (you will need an archiver program for this, such as WinZip or WinRar). Extracting your files can be done by clicking the “Extract To” button on your archiver program’s toolbar, by right-clicking the files and selecting “Extract”, or by simply dragging the files from the archive window into a folder of your choice. Where you extract the files to is not important, but you might want to keep all your fonts in the same place.
  • Select all .otf and .ttf files, right-click, and choose “Install”. This will automatically install your selected fonts for any application on your computer that uses fonts, including Adobe Illustrator.
  • All done! You can now reopen Adobe Illustrator and begin using your fonts.

On Mac

  • Make sure you close Adobe Illustrator and all other application that use fonts.
  • Follow steps 2 and 3 described above to download and extract your font files.
  •  Copy the .otf and .ttf files.
  •  Paste them – or skip the previous step and simply click and drag the files – into one of the following locations: If you’re logged in as an administrator, move your files to /Library/Fonts/. If you’re logged in as any other user, move them to /Users//Library/Fonts/.
  •  All done! You can now reopen Adobe Illustrator and begin using your fonts.
